Usually people suffering from insomnia will know right away. This is because the symptoms seem obvious. In fact, they are so easy to detect that some people may think they have insomnia when in fact they don't, they just didn't get a good night's sleep. However for people suffering from insomnia, the insomnia symptoms can vary from person to person and even from day to day in one individual. A person suffering from insomnia could experience only one symptom while another experiences three or four of them.
The first symptom of insomnia is difficulty falling asleep. This could last up to several hours while the person lies in bed tossing and turning trying to get to sleep. Awakening during sleep and being unable to get back to sleep is another symptom of insomnia.
Waking up too early is another symptom of insomnia. This occurs when you wake up hours before you are supposed to. If you're not feeling refreshed when you wake up, this means you are not getting a good quality sleep and are probably suffering from insomnia. Being irritable, drowsy, anxious and unproductive is another symptom of insomnia.
It's common for older adults to sleep less and have not quite as deep a sleep as children or teenagers. It's also common for them to experience fragmented sleep. This does not mean however that the sleep they do get is enough or of good enough quality. Poor quality sleep that lasts for some time can be attributed to health problems, medication use, and changes in life. This can all lead to chronic sleep problems.
The difference between people with insomnia and those who just sleep for less time is the quality of their lives. People with insomnia will be groggy, and have the inability to focus or concentrate. If a person can operate well on six or seven hours sleep, they are not suffering from insomnia. However, if a person is getting the same amount of sleep and having trouble going about their day and being productive, they might be suffering from insomnia and should seek medical attention.
There are a number of different remedies that can help them. If the insomniac periods last for too many days, functioning during the day will not only be difficult, it could prove dangerous or life-threatening.
